Ice Cube is here to save us from what Tom Cruise couldn’t!

Yep, War of the Worlds is set to receive a new adaptation releasing on Amazon Prime on Wednesday. The film is set to feature as a commentary on surveillance versus privacy whilst still featuring the giant robotic aliens. All this though will be combated by our lead protagonist Ice Cube. But he won’t be fighting these aliens with a sci-fi weapon or a master plan. Instead he’ll be doing it from a zoom call.

Yep. In a strange attempt at a Cloverfield-like found footage kind of film the entire film appears to be happening from Ice Cube’s desktop. You can catch the trailer below!

The phrase “It’s worse than you think” was used in the films trailer and I can’t tell if they mean the destruction taking place in the movie, or the actual quality of the film itself. Considering the film is set to drop this week with the trailer only being released now gives the impression even the studio is aware of how painful this movie might just be.

Now don’t get me wrong, found footage films and grounded sci-fi films like District 9 and Cloverfield have a cult following for good reasons. But as of right now this film looks like an extremely cheap imitation of both. Who knows though, it could be amazing. We’ll have to find out when it releases this week on the 30th of July.
