If your living room has been feeling a little too quiet lately, prepare for a stampede. After obliterating box office records and becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney’s Zootopia 2 has officially trotted onto digital platforms.

The animal metropolis is open for business on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fetch, and Foxtel and at a staggering $1.7 billion globally, you’ve likely already heard about it from someone. But does the sequel actually live up to the mammoth expectations?

The sequel reunites our favourite odd-couple cops: the ever-optimistic Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and the charm-offensive fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). This time, the stakes are a bit more… slithery. The arrival of Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan, sends the city into a spin and forces our duo to head undercover into unexplored districts.

It is a clever evolution of the first film and while the original tackled prejudice with a velvet glove, Zootopia 2 dives into the history of the city itself, introducing us to the reptilian residents who have long been left out of the narrative. It is sophisticated, witty, and maintains that “A” CinemaScore heart that Disney is known for.

More Than Just the Movie

One of the best perks of the digital release is the treasure trove of bonus content. If you have ever wondered how the literal “sausage” (or veggie treat) is made, the “The Zookeepers” featurette offers a tour of Walt Disney Animation Studios that is surprisingly candid and full of character, the deleted scenes are a lot of fun as well.

You can’t talk about Zootopia without mentioning the music. Shakira returns as the shimmering Gazelle, and her new single “Zoo” (co-written with Ed Sheeran) has already racked up over 500 million streams with a message of unity and “wild” joy, there are worse things to have stuck in your head.
