In his new book, Songs That Changed The World (hitting shelves October 1 via Gelding Street Press), Clarke dives into 42 tracks that did a lot more than just get people dancing. They confronted injustice, challenged the status quo, and gave people the exact words they needed when they were struggling to be heard.
From Billie Holiday’s brave and devastating 1939 performance of “Strange Fruit” to massive anthems by U2, Bob Dylan, and Public Enemy, the book spans nearly nine decades of global music history. It also travels well beyond the usual UK and US suspects, featuring powerful songs of resistance from Chile, Tunisia, Brazil, and the Soviet Union.
Clarke, a writer who has spent his career covering everything from Australian motorsport to politics, points out that this is not just another debate about the greatest hits. “This isn’t a book about the best songs ever recorded,” Clarke says. “It is about impact: the moments when a song became bigger than the artist who created it and began to change the world around it.”
At a time when global politics feels more divided than ever, looking back at the music of resistance might be exactly what we need to make sense of the present.
