Denzel Washington is opening up about his perspective on the Oscars.
In a recent interview with “Jake’s Takes,” Washington, who has earned nine Oscar nominations and won two, emphasized that awards have never dictated his choice of roles.
“I don’t do it for the Oscars. That’s not what drives me,” Washington shared. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and there have been times when I won but didn’t deserve it, and times when I didn’t win but should have. Man gives the award; God gives the reward.”
The acclaimed actor also revealed his indifference to collecting trophies.
“People ask me, ‘Where do you keep your Oscars?’ Well, next to the other one,” he said with a smile. “I’m not trying to brag, but honestly, on my last day, those awards won’t mean a thing to me.”
Earlier this year, Washington, who won Best Supporting Actor for Glory and Best Actor for Training Day, was considered a notable Oscar snub for his performance in Gladiator II. When asked about being overlooked during a New York Times interview, Washington responded with humor.
“Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I’m so upset,” he quipped sarcastically. “I’m happy for everyone who got nominated, and I’m happy with the work I’m doing.”
Currently, Washington is promoting his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, which debuts in select theaters from today and begins streaming on Apple TV+ on September 5.
