Urgent calls for wine industry support

More Riverland wine grape growers are calling for urgent government intervention, with many concerned the future of the industry is in serious trouble.

An informal gathering was held in Barmera this week, with around 100 growers discussing prices offered by wineries.  

Pricing of some red varieties is said to be between $120 and $150 per tonne for Riverland grapes – well under the estimated $350 per tonne production cost.

One grower who was at the meeting said government support was needed to support the local industry from collapse.
