Two people have fronted a Riverland Court this week, charged with several offences under SA’s Animal Welfare Act.

In total, the couple are facing 44 alleged offences, including 41 counts of ill-treatment of an animal and three counts of failure to comply with an animal welfare notice.

The charges stem from an RSPCA inspection last year in the Morgan area, with the pair now on bail to reappear in court later this year.

At this stage no plea has yet been entered by either of the accused, who at one stage were directors of an animal rescue charity.

The RSPCA outlined via a statement that Under SA’s Animal Welfare Act, the maximum penalty for animal cruelty is $20,000 or two years’ imprisonment, with offences deemed to be aggravated seeing the maximum penalties increased.

The RSPCA also reminded locals who witness animal cruelty or neglect they can file an online report at rspcasa.org.au or via 1300 477 722.
