Stockpiled disused treated pine vineyard posts could soon find a new purpose under a project looking for safe and practical solutions.

$150,000 has been allocated by the State Government for the pilot running in conjunction with the  National Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

For some time vineyard posts have been treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), a timber preservative to protect against fungal and insect pests.

While effective, the products present disposal challenges and as a result are often stockpiled on properties.

The new project will look at how the posts can be sorted, de-nailed and graded for future use including agricultural fencing.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Clare Scriven said She’s acutely aware of the impact of the global wine oversupply and have been actively working with industry groups to address the challenges facing the sector.
