Riverland & Mallee grain producers and landholders are being urged to report locust activity.

Locusts were first observed in the region late last week, with Grain Producers SA now working with PIRSA to provide information on locust sightings and to assist with levels of surveillance.

GPSA Chief Executive Officer Brad Perry urged grain producers to “stay vigilant during seeding and early crop establishment, particularly looking for, and reporting, egg-laying activity, hopper bands, adult swarms and high densities of the pest.”

Mr Perry added further “Initial indications are that these locusts may have moved into South Australia from interstate where activity has been building,”.

Officials say early reporting could be crucial, with locals able to report sightings to the PIRSA Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
