A new native fish hatchery could be created in Loxton, under a bold plan set out by the state opposition to boost recreational fishing.

This week the State Liberals announced their ‘Go Fish SA’ plan which would see over $10M poured into the industry.

Shadow Minister for Recreation and Member for Chaffey, Tim Whetstone, said a key pillar of the initiative is $5 million to develop the State’s first native fish hatchery at Loxton.

“This centre would breed Murray Cod, Golden Perch, freshwater Catfish and Silver Perch right here in South Australia, rather than purchasing from interstate,” Mr Whetstone said.

Re-Snagging of River Murray locations also forms part of the plan, with local MLC, Nicola Centofanti saying these so-called ‘fish-hotels’, can be built using native materials and provide an environment for native fish to breed, feed, seek refuge and rest.
