Big news for MMO fans. Square Enix just dropped a massive update for Final Fantasy XIV at the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, and if you’ve been waiting to take your Warrior of Light on the go, the wait is almost over.
The Switch 2 Release Date is Set
First up, Final Fantasy XIV officially launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026. Pre-orders are already live on the Nintendo eShop, and players will get a free one-month subscription to test the server waters. Whether you want to try the generous Free Trial or dive into the complete game, it is about to become much easier to play from the couch.
Enter the Bastion
Producer Naoki Yoshida also shared major details about the upcoming Evercold expansion, landing in January 2027. The biggest reveal was the game’s newest job: the Bastion. This main tank class dual-wields giant shields known as “skyltborg,” making it perfect for players who want to take some serious hits on the front lines.
The expansion will also bring a highly requested update to the game’s story progression. Players will finally have the freedom to choose their own path through the main scenario, with new auto-scaling difficulty keeping the challenge perfectly balanced. Add in expanded character customisation (including a new colour picker and fine-tuning for eyes and lips) and your character is going to look better than ever.
Epic Crossovers Incoming
Raids are getting a massive upgrade, too. Fans can look forward to an Evangelion alliance raid and “Beyond the Lifestream,” a highly anticipated 8-player crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
The hype is definitely real. Over the weekend, more than 400 fans packed into sold-out watch parties at Fortress Melbourne and Sydney just to catch the news live. With Patch 7.55 dropping tomorrow and a complete Chocobo overhaul planned for the future, there is a lot to look forward to.
