Oscar Piastri delivered a stellar performance at the Belgian Grand Prix, securing a commanding victory and extending his lead in the drivers’ championship to 16 points. Starting from second on the grid at a wet Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Piastri quickly took charge of the race, overtaking teammate and championship rival Lando Norris on the first racing lap to claim the lead.

The race began under challenging conditions, with rain delaying the start by an hour and 20 minutes. Once underway, the first four laps were completed behind the safety car on intermediate tyres before the racing truly began on lap five. Piastri wasted no time and capitalised on the first opportunity, making a decisive move to pass Norris and establish himself at the front.

As the track dried, pit strategies came into play. Piastri pitted on lap 12 for medium compound tyres, while Norris stayed out for an additional lap. McLaren opted for differing strategies for their drivers, with Norris taking on the more durable hard compound tyres, but the gap between the two stood at nine seconds.

For the remainder of the race, Piastri expertly managed his tyres over an extended 31-lap stint, maintaining composure under pressure as Norris attempted to close the gap. Mistakes from Norris, including an off-track excursion and two lock-ups, cost him valuable time and solidified Piastri’s position.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium with a third-place finish, holding off Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who had won Saturday’s sprint race.

With this win, Piastri now sits 16 points ahead of Norris in the drivers’ championship, with Verstappen trailing a further 65 points behind. The Australian’s victory at Spa solidifies his position as a serious contender for the title as the season progresses.
