The Riverland could be the home of a new type of horticulture, with industrial hemp trials proving a winner.

Minister Whetstone said “The results of two years of trialling nine varieties are positive and will support ongoing investment in the burgeoning industrial hemp industry,”

Traditionally industrial hemp has been used for textiles, paper & rope, while more recent applications have included composite building materials

A licence is needed to produce the crop and so far 13 cultivation licences have been issued with a further 2 processing licences also granted.

It’s estimated the crop could be worth a farm gate value of 3 million dollars within 5 years.
