The Father of former Riverland student Mahir Alam, now held in a Kurdish prison in Syria has made a heartfelt plea for his son to be returned to Australia.
Following schooling in the Riverland, Mahir(pictured above) moved to Melbourne where in 2014 he and three others travelled to Syria to join allegedly IS.
Earlier this year A video appeared filmed in Syria where 26 year-old Mahir said he was not an actual fighter but instead worked as a nurse at an IS hospital.
Speaking to the ABC recently Jahangir Alam, father of Mahir said He would like his grandchildren and their mother to come to Australia, and hopes the Government will take pity on his son.
Australian federal Minister for foreign affairs Marise Payne speaking recently stressed it was a difficult situation because some Australian IS fighters and their partners had chosen to take their children into "the most dangerous circumstance imaginable"
