The South Australian State Government says it’s hopeful the Murray Darling Basin Plan is now moving in the right direction, after the Federal Government announced a reworked model yesterday.
With the exception of Victoria, all Basin jurisdictions and the Commonwealth have agreed to deliver the new plan in full, with the deadline to deliver the 450GL initially promised to SA now shifted to December 2027.
The new plan includes the legislation of voluntary buy backs as the main mechanism in order to reach that target, with the measure a controversial one since the plan was initially established in 2012.
Roughly $20 million has also been set aside for South Australian communities to deliver a community adjustment assistance program.
