Drowning report not good reading for SA

The sudden upswing in temperatures has prompted water safety warnings.

This week’s release of the National Drowning Report revealed SA had a tragic increase in drowning’s over the past 12 months.

A total of 17 lives were lost to drowning in SA according to the report, three higher than the ten year average.

Rivers & Creeks remain the most dangerous locations.

2022/23 National Drowning Report SA Facts

82% of drowning deaths were males (14 deaths)

24% of drowning deaths were adults aged 45-54 years (4 deaths)

6% of drowning deaths were children under 5 years of age (1 death)

Top locations

29% of drowning deaths occurred at a River/creek (5 deaths)

18% of drowning deaths occurred at a Beach (3 deaths)

18% of drowning deaths occurred at a lake/dam (3 deaths)

18% of drowning deaths occurred at ocean/harbour locations (3 deaths)
