Dog owners best make sure their pets are well behaved, as new tough laws come into effect seeing fines significantly increased.
Dog owners now face fines up to $25,000 if their pet attacks and seriously injures or kills a person or animal.
This will also increase to $50,000 if the dog is already the subject of a dangerous dog order, the fine previous was $10,000.
The strengthened Dog and Cat Management Act will also allow councils to work proactively with dog owners to help prevent offences before they occur, including implementing measures – like repairing a fence – to stop dogs wandering at large.
Last year one Riverland council had almost 10 reported dog attacks, as part of over 150 dog and cat management act expiation notices.
